University Bound: Highlighting Camille N.
Each year, our graduating students are accepted to universities all around the world. The College Counseling Office works closely with each student to find universities that best fit his or her goals and interests to ensure that s/he continues to excel. With the University Bound series, we highlight some of their stories. This week's interview showcases Camille N., a senior in the BFI program, who will be attending Centrale-Supélec - McGill next year.
Congratulations on your acceptance to Centrale-Supélec - McGill! Can you share with us what made it your top choice?
I wanted a degree where I was free to explore the different specializations in engineering. This program allows me to first study all the varieties of engineering, then specialize at McGill. Also, the studies I am pursuing are both in Montréal and in France, which allows me to have more opportunities after the bachelor's degree [and decide] if I want to study in Europe or in North America. I wanted to study in English so if I choose to pursue studies after the bachelor's degree, I could have more opportunities, but I still wanted to be able to speak French and by choosing these universities, I can still speak French in the country and the city.
Do you already know what you plan to study? What types of clubs and activities are you excited to participate in on campus?
In this bachelor's degree program, I am able to study global engineering and discover all specializations of engineering. At McGill, I will be able to choose one of the nine specializations. At the beginning of 12th grade I wanted to study architecture, but after further research, I turned to engineering. Before studying all the engineering possibilities, I think I would choose civil engineering because of its similarity to architecture, but it also integrates more scientific studies. For the clubs and activities, I really want to participate in a collective sport, such as soccer or volleyball.
How do you think your time at LFC has prepared you for success in college?
As I have spent all my middle school and high school years at the LFC, I am used to studying in both French, in the French BAC, and English, in the BFI program. With the BFI, I not only focus on my spécialités, but am also able to focus on other courses such as History-Geography and English literature. The BFI has prepared me not only to work in both English and French, but also for a heavy workload.
How did you approach your college admissions journey? Create a balanced list? Take advantage of global opportunities? Utilize the resources available to you at school and at home?
When I first applied to all my schools, I had wanted to apply to five countries. I first started researching all the schools and the programs they offered, and which really matched with my interests. I first only applied to schools for one program, and then I discovered the Centrale-Supélec - McGill dual program after researching more on McGill. This program was the best fit for me, as I could discover all the different engineering programs, then specialize myself.
Do you have any advice for future LFC students going through the college application process?
For future LFC students, I would suggest starting by finding subjects which interest you the most, then participate in summer programs or activities that involve these subjects. By experiencing different fields and activities, I was able to find out which fields I preferred and make my choice for my schools.
