LFC Shines at Illinois Junior Academy of Science State Fair
For the second year in a row, LFC high school students qualified for the Illinois Junior Academy of Science (IJAS) State Fair, which took place at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in early May. After their success at the Regional Fair in March, six Science Club members advanced to the final round—where they competed against 900 projects from public and private schools across the state. Congratulations to our participants, who each received an award for their hard work (listed in ascending order):
- 11th-graders Andrea C. and Duru M., who received a silver award for their project antibiotic resistance, specifically the lactic acid bacteria used to make yogurt
- 10th-grader Romane C., who received a gold award for her project on the effect of leaf pigmentation on photosynthesis
- 10th-grader Akhil M., who received a gold award for his project on the effects of pH levels on an essential enzyme
- 11th-graders Paul L. and Claire Z., who received a gold award and EPIC (Exceptional Project in its Category) Award in physics—which is given to only two projects in each category—for their project on the impact of color on the refractive index of water.
Their excellent results place LFC among the top high schools in Illinois—an incredible feat!
