Recently, eight members of our high school Science Club (two from Grade 10, five from Grade 11 and one from Grade 12) took part in the Illinois Junior Academy of Science Regional Fair, competing against some 30 schools from across the Chicago area. This year, 300 projects were in the running and participants were judged both on the scientific approach to their topic of choice, as well as on the quality of their poster and presentation. Congratulations to our students, whose six competing projects each received recognition! In ascending order, a bronze medal, a silver medal, a gold medal, an Award of Excellence, and two Superior Achievement Awards – the most prestigious prize given only to the top 5% of projects (i.e., the 16 best this year) – were achieved. These excellent results placed LFC third in the competition, ranking among some of the region's best high schools. Impressive!

Superior Achievement Award:

  • Project by Paul L. and Clare Z. (Grade 11) studying the impact of colour on the refractive index of water
  • Project by Romane C. (Grade 10) studying the effect of leaf Pigmentation on photosynthesis

Award of Excellence:

  • Project by Akhil M. (Grade 10) studying the effects of pH levels on an essential enzymes

Gold Award:

  • Project by Andrea C. and Duru M. (Grade 11) studying antibiotic resistance, specifically the lactic acid bacteria used to make yogurt

Silver Award:

  • Project by Louis K. (Grade 11) studying the variations in kinetic and mechanical energy during an acceleration

Bronze Award:

  • Project by Charline B. (Grade 12) studying the impact of light variability on the growth of photosynthetic microorganisms.

Congratulations and good luck to Andrea C., Romane C., Paul L., Akhil M., Duru M. and Claire Z., who qualified for the State Final in May at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign!
