Annual School Trips
Every year, students in the following grade levels take an educational trip:
Two hours away from Chicago in Michigan, the children spend three days and two nights in a nature camp. They become more independent and responsible. They attend various workshops where they learn how to cook, build music instruments, and discover nature. They also participate in a treasure hunt, a sports tournament and social activities.
The 5th graders fly to St. Pierre (a small French island north of the St. Laurent's estuary). They spend 10 days with hosting families and live like the inhabitants. They discover life in the archipelago (boat trips, fishing, factories, museums and more) and tour City Hall and the local radio/television station.
Every other year, the 6th and 7th graders spend three days at the Northwestern Illinois University Taft-Lorado Campus in the spring. The students build strong relationships with their peers, as well as with their teachers in participating in various outdoors activities. Through hands-on activities, students learn how Native Americans and pioneers lived. They also collect water samples from the river to discover the different life forms and, at night, observe the stars and learn about astronomy.
The 8th graders spend three days in Washington, D.C. at the end of March. Guided by their teachers, they study important documents, institutions and figures of the American Revolution; they also visit other meaningful museums and monuments, including the Holocaust museum, the Vietnam War Memorial, Arlington Cemetery, the Air and Space museum, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the Capitol, the Supreme court and others.
Students spend Friday night through Sunday at one of the region's YMCA Camps, where they participate in a variety of sports and other activities, including canoeing, archery, soccer, volleyball, group cooperation and leadership training, and high school policy development. The goal of this weekend is to strengthen the sense of community among students and accompanying teachers, to teach students about citizenship in the Lycée community, and to have fun in an outdoor environment. |
