Jan 16, 2009 To commemorate Martin Luther King Day, the 9th grade English students have organized a special program to be presented at 8:40 A.M. on Tuesday, January 20 for the 4th through 8th grade students. The class has created a power point presentation that highlights Dr. King’s life and outlines the process of how this day became a national holiday in the United States. They have also made signs similar to ones that would have been carried in demonstrations where Dr. King spoke and will use these signs as part of a mock protest march as they enter the auditorium. In addition, the 9th grade students have written speeches from Dr. King’s perspective, which imagined what he would have said at Barack Obama’s inauguration if Dr. King had been alive today. Stefan Jung’s speech has been selected by the class to be read at the assembly. Alice Duquesnoy will serve as the Master of Ceremony, Gabriel Staton and Marilyn Simpson will present the power point., and Andre Nguyen and Julien Baliozian have organized video clips of Dr. King’s speeches so that the assembly can see and hear Dr. King himself. In celebration of Dr. King’s contribution to the recent historic election of Barack Obama, the students will end their protest march with signs that read, “Yes We Can!” |
