French System

Guidance for French orientation at the Lycée is provided by the College Advisor. Information sessions are organized regularly to assist students in making critical choices. The College Advisor provides one-to-one assistance when required.

Choose the Right Curriculum

In the French system, students begin to focus on specific subjects early, according to the type of occupation and/or higher education options they wish to pursue. At the end of 9th grade, students choose the elective courses they will take in 10th grade, in addition to the core curriculum. At the end of 10th grade, they select the Baccalaureate track (math/science, languages and literature, or social science and economics) they will follow in 11th and 12th grades.

Post-Baccalaureate Options and Application Procedures

University

French Universities cover the entire range of academic disciplines, from science and technology to literature, linguistics, economics, law, medical studies and related disciplines. They may also include research centers, institutes and laboratories.

Studies of medicine, pharmacology, and dentistry fall into a specific category of academic studies and require a selective exam at the end of the first year.

Students who are taking their Baccalaureate outside of France benefit from an early application procedure, centralized for all universities in France, with the exception of architecture and Paris Dauphine, which require individual applications. The procedure allows three choices ranked by preference. As future Baccalaureate holders from abroad, Lycée students benefit from an admission priority on their first choices.

The applications are completed online at http://www.dossier-bleu.fr. Applicants who are admitted are notified in May and confirmed in writing at a later date.

Classes préparatoires aux Grandes Ecoles (CPGE)

These two-year preparatory courses prepare students for the very competitive entrance examinations to the Grandes Ecoles (highly selective schools, public or private).

  • Scientific CPGEs prepare students for engineering, science, veterinary education Grandes Ecoles
  • Economic and commercial CPGEs prepare students for business and management Grandes Ecoles
  • Literary CPGEs prepare for education, political science, business and journalism Grandes Ecoles

Application for all CPGEs in France is a centralized online procedure. Students may apply to up to 12 different schools. For more information, visit the Classes Préparatoires registration website.

Sciences politiques (IEP)

The IEP (Sciences po) entrance exam is also prepared by private schools offering dedicated preparatory courses. These preparatory courses are not part of the CPGE system. Applications need to be filed for each of them. Students who have passed the Baccalaureate with the Highest Honors may submit an application to be admitted “sur dossier” without passing the exam.

Specialized Schools

Specialized schools of design, fashion, architecture, visual arts, dance, music, paramedical, health care and social work, journalism, management, advertising and other related disciplines may offer short- or long-term post-Bac programs of three to five years.

Applications to most of these schools must be made individually. Some post-Bac management schools have come together to offer a common admission exam (TEAM, SESAME, PASS, ACCES).

Baccalaureate Honors

Depending on their scores on the Baccalaureate exam, students can receive honors:

  • mention assez-bien: passed with honors
  • mention bien: passed with high honors
  • mention très bien: passed with highest honors

With high and highest honors, students can re-submit an application to a school that previously did not accept them. Foreign students who have passed the French Baccalaureate with honors may apply for an Excellence Scholarship. For more information, visit www.aefe.diplomatie.fr.
