Evaluations & Exams

Lycée students are tested on an ongoing basis. These evaluations enable us to measure our students' level and progress and help us identify areas in which additional support or remediation may be necessary. Parents of pre-schoolers receive semiannual progress reports; all other parents receive reports three times a year.

In addition the Lycée, as an official French school, must:

  • Evaluate its students using the French National Test at the beginning of the 2nd, 3rd and 6th grades
  • Prepare its students to take two French exams: the Brevet des Collèges, awarded at the end of 9th grade, and the French Baccalaureate awarded at the end of 12th grade

Lycée students also take the following American standardized tests:

  • IOWA tests in elementary and middle schools, starting in 3rd grade
  • PSAT tests in 9th and 10th grades, prepared and administered in-house
  • SAT, ACT, AP and TEOFL tests in 11th and 12th grades, prepared through Kaplan on campus and taken at designed test centers

The Brevet des Collèges

To receive the Brevet, students take an exam, organized by the French examination center in Washington. Their scores on this test, combined with their ongoing performance in the 9th grades, determine whether they receive the diploma.

The French Baccalaureate

To receive the Baccalaureate, students take a two-part test. (Classroom performance is not considered in this case.) The first portion of the test, which covers the French Language Arts (and the Sciences for students in literary and economics tracks), is taken at the end of 11th grade. The remaining subjects are covered by a second exam at the end of 12th grade. Students with passing scores are awarded the French Baccalaureate, whose requirements are more stringent than a North American high school diploma.

Bilingual speakers may choose to pursue International Option of the French Baccalaureate (OIB). The OIB offers a French/American bilingual/bicultural program where students take intensive English Literature and History/Geography courses and test for the Baccalaureate in English for these subjects. The questions are selected and graded by the American College Board in cooperation with the French Ministry of Education.
