Elementary School (Grades 1 to 5)
Since 1991, the Lycée Français de Chicago has welcomed children from both French speaking and non-French speaking families at the pre-elementary levels, but only French-speaking children in older grades. This has changed. The Lycée now admits non-French speaking children up to grade 5.
The grade 1 to 5 application and admission process differs according to the student’s prior experience with French.
Students transferring from other schools in the French system are required to submit the completed Application for Admission and transcripts of their last three academic years.
Students who are new to French or to the French education system are required to meet with the Elementary School Director and to submit a completed Application for Admission and transcripts of their last three academic years. If admitted, they enter a Welcoming Class with just five to ten other students, where they are given intensive French language instruction. After a few months, or when their language skills are solid enough to follow the Lycée Curriculum, they are integrated into regular classes.
Applications are accepted year round. Acceptances are based on available space and the applicant’s academic history and previous school evaluations. Applicants may also be tested before being admitted to the Lycée.
